Curriculum Intent:

At OJS, we encourage our pupils to develop a curiosity and fascination for art and design. We endeavour to nurture responsible citizens, aware of their surroundings; confident individuals who are proud of their heritage; successful learners that understand their place in our ever-changing world.

We offer a sequence of lessons that cover the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum. Our art and design content will develop an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history and contribute to the culture, creativity and abundance of our society. We aim to engage, inspire and challenge our pupils; equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Our curriculum encompasses a practical approach in which every child can feel a sense of achievement, express preferences and critique their own work in order to improve and develop their skills. We are also very aware of environmental issues and reuse and recycle whenever we can which is apparent in the many mixed media works that the children produce. The artists that we study and use for inspiration have been carefully selected so that they represent a broad range of styles and diversity
